Welcomed With Open Arms

As the date for my initial trip to the DRC neared, Christian contacted me via WhatsApp. The date of my arrival was also the date of his planned proposal to his (now) wife Rachel. It was big, happy news. The news that followed was slightly different - I’d be attending the engagement party.

Newark to Rome. Rome to Addis Ababa. Addis Ababa to Goma. When I finally made to Goma, Christian was immediately warm, engaging, and helpful to this sweaty, stinky guy who hadn’t seen the inside of a shower in more than a day - all well preparing for one of the most nerve wracking and exciting days of his life. After lunch at Hôtel Cap Kivu, we headed down the road to Lac Kivu Lodge and its Le Chalet restaurant, the site of the coming engagement.

The lunch view at Hôtel Cap Kivu

With Lake Kivu as a backdrop, motorboats and Congolese pop music as a soundtrack, Christian proposed, armed with roses and balloons, all while being supported by adoring friends and family. It was impossible for Rachel to say anything but yes.

The stage is set

Rounds of pictures with friends and family followed, with the happy couple in the middle of it all. Then… me? Christian, who had known me only hours, and Rachel who had only met me minutes earlier, were taking me pictures as if we had been lifelong friends.

How could she say anything but yes?

The whole night proceeded this way, with Christian treating me like family. In the midsts of one of the happiest days of his life, he was going out of his way to make sure I felt welcomed. He translated, introduced, explained, and made sure my needs were met.

As I got to know Christian more though, I saw this was just who he was. Selflessness is innate in him, and he works to ensure others are taken care of before himself. When you know that about him, it makes perfect sense then that Congo Local Guides would be socially-conscious, that he’d throw himself fully into The Kivu Project, that he’d be so passionate about affecting positive change. It’s just who he is, and I’m truly lucky to call him my friend.

The happy couple.
